À partir du 1er janvier 2026, l’Examen civique devient obligatoire en France (métropole et outre-mer).
L’Examen civique permet d’attester de vos connaissances sur les principes, les valeurs et la vie en France, dans le cadre de certaines démarches administratives. Il s’inscrit dans le parcours d’intégration et vise à vérifier que vous disposez des repères essentiels pour vivre et vous installer durablement en France.
L’examen est proposé sous 3 mentions, en fonction de votre objectif :
– Mention “Carte de séjour pluriannuelle”
– Mention “Carte de Résident”
– Mention “Demande de naturalisation”.
Passing the 2026 civics exam
How does the civics exam work?
The civics exam is a test designed to assess knowledge of the fundamental principles necessary for living in France. It includes:
- 40 questions in French, in multiple-choice format,
- Two types of questions: knowledge questions and scenario-based questions.
- Content covering the five themes of civic education: principles and values of the Republic, institutional and political system, rights and duties, French history, geography, and culture, and living in French society.
Duration: 45 minutes
Format: on computer
Objective: to get at least 32 correct answers
How to prepare for the civics exam?
Il existe différents niveaux de difficulté en fonction de la mention visée. Pour s’y préparer au mieux, l’Etat français met à disposition un site internet officiel et gratuit :

Who is affected by the civics exam?
The Civic Exam is intended for anyone in France who wishes to apply for the first time for:
• multi-year residence permit;
• resident card;
• French naturalization.
The civics exam does not apply to individuals applying for a Temporary Residence Permit (CST) for the first time, namely:
- CST (1 year): first residence permit, no civics exam required;
- CSP (2 to 4 years): issued after the CST,the Civic Exam is mandatory.
Starting January 1, 2026, passing this exam will be mandatory for first-time applicants.
NB: Proof of passing the civics exam is not mandatory for renewal applications.
Exemptions or accommodations are available for certain groups: people with disabilities, people over the age of 65, and holders of French diplomas, according to official texts.

How much does the exam cost?
All fees must be paid when you submit your registration form. You can pay in cash (by appointment), by check, or by bank transfer (upon request).
